Vi er snart i mål nå. Min gode medarbeider Pål har lagt inn et pent stykke arbeid med å gå igjennom mobilbruken for en del av våre ansatte, og satt dette inn i et regneark for å sjekke hvordan prisene vil se ut med de tilbyderne vi vurderer gitt et reelt bruksmønster. Hovedkonklusjonen så langt er at det er tydelig at de vi vurder har deltatt i samme konkurranse. For de ender opp omtrent helt likt. En parameter som ser ut til å bli litt sentral i vår vurdering er prisen på utenlands datatrafikk. Dette trekker en god del av kostnadene, og det skiller en god del på modellene som benyttes.
En leverandør opererer med en modell der det inngås avtaler med noen operatører i de forskjellige landene, slik at man kan få en lav pris dersom man roamer på en av disse operatørene. Problemet med en slik modell er at prisen for andre operatører da som regel blir veldig høy; det kan være fire eller fem ganger så høy. Samtidig er det ikke gode systemer på plass for å sikre at den operatøren som gir god pris velges. Som regel vil valg av operatør styres av hvem som tilbyr sterkest signal akkurat der mobilen befinner seg. Man kan derfor fort ende opp med noen veldig dyre overraskelser. En annen operatør har valgt en helt annen modell. De tilbyr fast pris for hvert land, uavhengig av operatør. Ulempen med dette er at prisen blir noe høyere enn det beste konkurrenten kan tilby. Den store fordelen er forutsigbarhet når det gjelder pris, og løsningen er mye enklere å forholde seg til siden man ikke trenger tenke på hvilken operatør man roamer på.
Om det skulle vise seg at prisen uansett hvordan man snur og vender på det blir veldig lik for alle tilbyderne, blir vi nødt til å vurdere andre kriterier. De viktigste kriteriene da blir administrasjonløsning (web-basert system for administrasjon av abonnementer, simkort og tjenester), fakturering, og hvor enkel løsningen er i bruk. Dersom det fortsatt skulle skille for lite mellom leverandørene til å velge må vi vurdere om det er forskjell på support og service-siden.
Og om de fortsatt skulle stille helt likt, blir vi rett og slett nødt til å gjøre et valg.

On the iPad
Today, I skimmed through this post from eWEEK. It's interesting to note that the guy he wrote this obviously does not have a clue at all what the iPad is all about. He mention the lack of video output, dvd drive, and usb as problems.
The only thing from this eWEEK thing I accept is the fact that the cheapest version of iPad is way to cheap. You will need 3G and a bit more storage is also nice to have.
Do you think I will get an iPad?
- If you want to connect to an external monitor, why use an iPad; it's supposed to be portable—connecting to a tv or a display defeat the purpose. Just hook up your laptop (or Mac mini).
- If you want to lug around an external dvd drive or accept an internal dvd drive, you can as well just use your laptop.
- Data is on the net, your "usb" memory is for instance Dropbox.

Å velge en telefoniavtale - II
Loddene er kastet. Nå har jeg invitert de mest relevante leverandørene til møte.
Når jeg snakker med dem vil de selvsagt selge inn "høykompleksitets" løsninger og trådløse bedrifter og web-baserte sentralbord. Men vi trenger ikke noe av det der, og det forsøker jeg å fortelle dem. Når man ringer en forsker er det som regel fordi man trenger å snakke med den forskeren. Det er ikke så relevant med en ringegruppe hvor man automatisk kobles videre til neste mann. Det kan selvsagt skje at det er nyttig, men antagelig skjer det i 1 av 1000 tilfeller eller der omkring, så vi kjøper ikke en løsning basert på det. Og sentralbordet har vi satt ut til noen som er flinke med den slags, så det trenger vi heller ikke.
Nei, det viktige for oss er hva det koster å snakke med folk og hva det koster å bruke datatrafikk. Og det har jeg fortalt dem at jeg vil pushe dem på. Spesielt mot utlandet. Hva koster det å ringe hjem; ringe til kollega som er i samme by, men i utlandet; eller ringe hjemmefra og ut. Og hva koster det å henge på facebook på torvet i San Francisco? Det er sånt som er viktig for oss. Kan man for eksempel få en sms for hver 1000-lapp som går på data-takstameteret? Det ville være svært nyttig. De store mobilregningene kommer nemlig når noen har gått litt bananas i utlandet, ofte uten å være ordentlig klar over det selv til og med.
Selvsagt skal vi regne på vanlige ting også, men der er det tross alt så lite som skiller de forskjellige leverandørene, at det blir mindre interessant. Men jeg skal uansett bruke litt tid den kommende uka på å finregne og skrive ned våre behov i litt detalj. Og torsdag 4 februar kommer de for å gjøre seg lekre. Å velge en telefoniavtale
Er det et marked som er rotete, forvirrende, og manipulerende, så er det telefonimarkedet. Simula Research Laboratory har gjennom 3 år hatt Ventelo som leverandør på mobiltelefoni og bredbånd, men har nå sagt opp avtalen for å fristilles til å forhandle en ny avtale. Innen 10 mars må vi derfor ha funnet en ny leverandør, ellers står vi uten telefoni—ikke akkurat en ønsket situasjon.
Vi er i den heldige situasjonen at vi er Uninett medlemmer. Uninett har nylig kjørt en omfattende anbudsprosess som endte opp med at det ble inngått tre rammeavtaler innenfor telefoniområdet. Vi kan nå velge blant disse tre avtalene, men må først gjennomføre en begrenset minikonkurranse. Og hva møter meg? Først en gjeng med selgere som forsøker å gjøre seg lekre. Kjedelig, men kanskje nødvendig. For det neste som møter meg er tall. Mange tall. De som kjenner meg vet at jeg ikke har store problemer med tall; snarere tvert imot. Men når tallene skal kombineres med størrelser som langt på vei er ukjente, og som vi heller ikke har gode modeller for å estimere, da blir det rotete det hele. Og manipulerende. For en avtale kan innholde noen veldig lave tall. Ja vel, det er som regel på bekostning av noen andre mye større tall. Oppstartskost, minuttkost, til fast, til mobil, til mobil i naboens nett og til mobil i fetterens nett, og til fasttelefoner i Tyskland. Eller til noen som spiller sjakk.
Hvor mange av mine venner spiller sjakk? Hvor ofte ringer min kollega. Ringer hun ofte og kort, ofte og lenge, sjeldent og lenge, eller bare passe lenge passe ofte? Og hva med alle de andre? Alt dette må estimeres, og så må det kombineres med alle de andre tallene, og så kan vi få frem en pris. Og så kan vi legge til datatrafikk og SMS og MMS, og konferansetelefoni til utland og innland. Da har vi forhåpentligvis trengt oss forbi det manipulerende, forvirrede rot, og er istand til å gjøre et godt og riktig valg. Sa jeg forresten at vi planlegger å kvitte oss med fasttelefonene i samme slengen. Det planlegger vi, og det gjør ikke jobben så mye lettere.
Altså har jeg en liten jobb foran meg. Jeg har en strategi også. Dessverre kan jeg ikke si stort om tallene, men jeg skal se om ikke jeg kan si noe som er delvis fornuftig allikevel.

New look and more
About time to make a change to this blog. I was a bit bored with the old lock, and there was to much manual stuff in there. So I just wiped everything and started anew with one of the standard templates.
In other news, I am now "certified" as a HSE person. In Norway, the management in every company are obliged by law to participate in a HSE course that lasts one day. Of course, the motivation and energy in search seminars that are mandatory could be so-so, but I think the course was quite ok, considering the circumstances. And I actually learned a few things.
I am still waiting for the N900 review by my coworker, maybe I just have to get one myself. But first I shall check out the Apple slate that the whole world belive will be on display 27. January...
And finally, a tiny piece in Norwegian: Hvorfor i all verden er det sånn at fjortiser som blogger om helt trivielle ting kan tjene en årslønn på blogg og ha titusenvis av lesere, mens jeg som skriver om skikkelig superseriøse ting enda ikke har fått en eneste utbetaling fra google adSense, etter å ha hatt adSense på bloggen min et par år minst! Ok, jeg er ikke så dum, jeg bare later som. Men det står masse spennende nerdestuff rundt her altså...

By the end of 2009
Another year has soon passed away. Goodbye 2009, it was nice to know you! If there still are anyone following this blog, you of course know that there have been just a very small number of posts the last year. And that is not because nothing has happend - rather the opposite. Just not so much to write about here.
In the past, I have written about versions of qtpfsgui for Mac OSX. Unfortunately, I don't think I have compiled even a single version of the program the last year? Or, wait a minute, yes—I did a version back in March or something. After that, the program has even changed it's name. I am not sure if I will be the one compiling Luminance HDR in the future, but until someone else take on the task, I guess I will be listed as OSX maintainer.
Other things I have used this blog for in the past is writing reviews of gadgets and computers. Unfortunately, the last year has not been very interesting with respect to that. I am from time to time tinkering with Ubuntu on a Fujitsu tablet, but that is only occasionally. And the hard parts like sound and completely sans-keyboard operation right from the gdm log-on, still needs to be figured out. Besides that, I am using iMac, Macbook pro 13" and iPhone 3Gs. While these are nice devices, there are tons of other reviews of them out there—so nothing to write about.
Quite a bit of time was spent during 2009 on producing two big documents using LaTeX; a book about Simula Research Laboratory now published by Springer, and an self-evaluation report of the same Laboratory. I could have written about LaTeX and issues related to fonts, typography, and style. But I still feel I am catching up on this relative to where I was a few years ago. So, again not much to write about.
When it comes to my daily work, I am entering a new phase now. Since Simula Research Laboratory was established in 2001, I have been in charge of the IT systems, and the last few years I have been the IT Manager. But from 1 January 2010 I am leaving this position to take on the position as Director of Administration. My good friend and colleague Carelius will be the new IT Manager. This certainly mean that I will do less technical stuff, but I will still be interested and also provide IT guidance and advice when necessary. There are also some parts of our systems that no one else know sufficiently well and which I still will take care of. Maybe something to write about shows up related to my new position...
I have also asked one of my colleagues who are interested in gadgets and Linux and webprogramming to write something one this web. Maybe he actually does that—in that case the first entry will be a review of the Nokia N900, from a system administrators perspective.

Qtpfsgui
It's been a while, but now a new version of qtpfsgui is in works. Just want to let you know. I have recreated the whole toolchain on my laptop, with new versions of exiv2, fftw, libtiff, ilmbase, andopenexr - and as usual everything is not smooth, but the progress is fine.

When are Google going to fix filters?
I enjoy a lot quite a few of the tools Google creates. But there is one thing I really can't belive they still have not fixed. Filters in Gmail. I really, really need some kind of regexp or wildcard filtering, and this is still not available. For instance, I like to be able to do stuff with mail from 'name-*@some.domain' or '*-dev-owner@some.domain' or even use the '*' in the domain-part. But this seems to be quite impossible.
It's a sad thing. Please fix it!

Happy new year!
Wow, it's three months since my last post - that's bad. I'm so busy with lots of stuff that I find very little time for ramblings over here.
On the tech-side, I up'ed the Fujitsu tablet to the latest Ubuntu, 8.10. That works quite fine, but not perfect.
These days, I work quite a lot on out Plone system, but mostly on the intranet side, so not much to show off here. Have a look at http://simula.no if you like to check out the place I work and (a part) of what I do at work.
Also, have a look at http://brunstad.org if you are concerned about the bigger issues of life, faith and eternity!

Ubuntu on Fujitsu Siemens ST5112
Dear folks,
I haven't been a busy blogger lately. The reason is mostly that I do not have much time left for blogging, but a reason may also be that there isn't that much to write about either.
I know that some of the readers of this page might expect some qtpfsgui news, as I more or less promised to look into some bugs. Unfortunately, there haven't been any time left for that this summer. I am a family man, you know. So, no qtpfsgui hacking this summer (and not much of photography either unfortunately). And the fall looks quite busy, so I won't make any promises.
What I can say a few words about, though, is the new computer I got this week. It's a tablet I'm testing out as a notetaking device for meetings and stuff like that - a Fujistu Siemens ST5112. Actually, this is the second device of this kind I have put my hands on this summer. The other is the Sahara i440D from Tabletkiosk - a capable device in itself, but not much to write about here as I left windows running on it, because another more windows friendly colleague was supposed to test it too. From a design point of view, however, the Sahara is a likeable computer!
I have spent a few hours today with the ST5112 installing Ubuntu. Or actually, I did a basic Ubuntu installation yesterday, and used the night to do the necessary apt-get upgrade; the amount of security and otherwise updates on 8.04 is rather long. Today, I have tweaked settings to adapt to the tablet environment. As the ST5112 does not have a keyboard at all I must be able to do most things without one. I have installed the xvkbd package which gives an onscreen keyboard that can be used when absolutely necessary, but I really like to avoid it for most things. But I am getting lost in details here. The important information is:
Bottom line is that I think I can use Ubuntu on this one. I still have to do some scripting in order to move my meeting notes taken with Xournal (probably) over to Evernote, but that is just fun! As Evernote don't have a linux version yet, I must move the notes over using email.
The end is: If you are looking for a tablet pc that works with Linux, the ST5112 from Fujitsu Siemens can easily be your answer.
The major drawback? Only 1024x768 resolution on the screen. But I have to work with it a few days before I make a finale conclusion on that. Maybe it is ok for the intended use!

- X work almost out of the box. Had to add the RandRRotation (True) in order to make rotation with xrandr work.

- Wacom pen input works out of the box, as soon as setserial and wacom stuff was installed. Had to add the wacom lines manually in xorg.conf, though.
- Wifi works out of the box
- Suspend/resume work out of the box. I set the option that stores and resumes the VGA but I don't know whether it was absolutely necessary.
- Bluetooth keyboard and mouse works just fine, but must be configured manually by running hciscan/hidd and edit the hcid.conf file.
- Even most of the hotkeys on one side of the ST5112 works out of the box, like page up/down, scroll buttongs, and hotkey for starting the email program.
- The only thing that don't work so far is sound. I have read enough on the net to avoid start thinkering with it; it will probably need some attention...

Ubuntu 8.04 on Oqo O2
Hmm,
I was pretty sure I wrote something on Ubuntu 8.04 on the Oqo, but I can't find it right now.
Short story: Use the alternate cd to install - everything is smooth. Or you can of course upgrade from and older version of Ubuntu.
Sad things: Wireless network doesn't work (but bluetooth do). And the wacom pen-input is still a joke, with unbearable amount of vectoring. And I can't get sound to work either. And you will still need a special modeline for Xorg (the same as in older versions of Ubuntu, the modeline is available here on the blog somewhere).
Bottom-line - the Oqo O2 with Ubuntu 8.04 is just a brick. Sorry to say so, but look elsewhere for a great, small, linux device. Of course I should have been positive, raving about all the things that do work. But for me wifi is crucial on such a small device, and so is sound. And the pen is the main reason I bought it in the first place.

I was pretty sure I wrote something on Ubuntu 8.04 on the Oqo, but I can't find it right now.
Short story: Use the alternate cd to install - everything is smooth. Or you can of course upgrade from and older version of Ubuntu.
Sad things: Wireless network doesn't work (but bluetooth do). And the wacom pen-input is still a joke, with unbearable amount of vectoring. And I can't get sound to work either. And you will still need a special modeline for Xorg (the same as in older versions of Ubuntu, the modeline is available here on the blog somewhere).

Qtpfsgui 1.9.2 for Mac
Hi folks,
I have uploaded a qtpfsgui v.1.9.2 binary on sourceforge now. I did this rather quick this morning, so I hope I got the steps right.

Testing a new device
Sure, I know I am late on this one as the device has been on the market for months. I am testing the Nokia E90, mostly as a better replacement for HTC TyTN II which I have tried in the past and my boss use now.
So far, I am really happy with the performance of the E90. The web browser included is so goos that I even write this post on the phone. The E61i was good, but this one is even better!

Modified Qtpfsgui 1.9.1 is up
I think I have corrected the issues with the first OSX version of qtpfsgui 1.9.1. There is a new disk image at sourceforge now, please go grab it and create some nice images :)

Apology: align_image_stack and qtpfsgui
Hi folks,
I am so sorry, but I managed to put the wrong align_image_stack binary into the disk image for qtpfsgui v. 1.9.1. I have a working binary on my computer (but obviously I had more than one...). The version in there now will crach and burn.
I will create a new disk image as soon as I can, hopefully today. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Qtpfsgui 1.9.1 is out!
Hi folks,
I managed to build the 1.9.1 a bit quicker than the 1.9.0 :) Hopefully, the problems with align_image_stack is resolved with this version, I haven't had the time yet to test it myself. User-experiences are welcome!

Qtpfsgui 1.9.0 update
Just a short notice - there was a minor problem with the first 1.9.0 dmg I uploaded to sourceforge. A library that is not included on either Tiger or Leopard (as far as i know) by Apple, was dynamically linked into the app. I have now uploaded a new dmg where the libintl library (which was the problem) is statically linked into the qtpfsgui app.
Hope this fix some problems! Userreports are welcome, as always.
