Nokia E61i and Papyrus

Hi, I got some questions about the E61i and Papyrus. To be more exact, the question was if it was possible to see detailed notes on tasks and events. Today I have downloaded and installed a trial version of Papyrus for Symbian S60, v.9.1. The version of Papyrus I have installed is 1.2.13, as the latest version, 1.2.14, use some funny language when used on my E61i with Norwegian menus.

I can at least confirm that the longer notes does show up when Papyrus is used. So you guys out there who want the notes and like to use Papyrus - you can go ahead and make the purchase.

Besides that, thanks for the tip about Papyrus. It looks some much nicer than the default calendar application! I guess I have to buy it in order to test it as default calendar application (now, I have to open it each time I want to look at it). Comments are appreciated on that.

Take care,

Hi Mandus! Thanks for the ideas on your blog! I am very curious about how you have set up your E61i now to work with mail, calendar, and to-dos. Also, if you have found a way to use it as a modem with a MacBook. I have tried both with Bluetooth and the USB-cable, but no look.

I am still using only the default software on the phone, but I'm not very happy with for example how to-dos are presented.

Thanks for your comment David.

Regarding the E61i and mail, I have set it up to use my company imap account. A nice feature on the E61i mailapplication is that you can select just a subset of the imap folders and only these will be in the folder-view, and when fetching new emails only these folders are considered. Nice for someone like me who get a lot of email and do filtering on the serverside. Regarding calendar and to-dos I use the builtin application. It is not a perfect solution, and I consider papyrus which seems to work better, but then it is not very important to me as I have a small laptop at hand most of the time. I do agree with you that the to-dos are not a great feature of the builtin applications on E61i...

Regarding E61i as modem, I can tell you that it works great - from my linux-laptop... From the Macbook Pro, I have had no luck so far. I think the reason is the dialup application on the Mac side, somehow it still is linked to my old phone (the HTC TyTN), so when I try to connect to internet using modem it search for the HTC on bluetooth, and don't find it. I have paird my E61i and I have told the Mac that I want that to be my modem now, but it doesn't help. Haven't had enough time to figure that out yet. It's a shame, but I know the problem is not the E61i as it works great with linux.

I'll be back with more during the summer I guess, as I will have more time to consider these things. On the other hand though, I also consider a new very small computer (as you may have seen on the blog, the Oqo O2), and will switch to a much smaller phone if I go that route - the idea is to carry the Oqo all the time :0

Good to hear it's not only me not being able to get the E61i to work as modem to mac...

Looking forward to following your experiences!

@David,

actually I was wrong! The E61i do works as a modem! Last time I checked I was in the U.S., and there must have been some hick-ups with the roaming.

This is my setup: I use bluetooth, have paired my Macbook Pro (running tiger, 10.4.10), and selected that I want to use the phone as modem. Further, I use '*99#' as telephone number to select the gprs-dataconnection on the phone. I have typed in the basic Djuice username/password because I am on Telenor network here in Norway, that's just 'dj' and 'dj'. I'm not even sure that is necessary, but if it is, you probably have something simple on your network as well.

Finally, I have selected 'Nokia Infrared' as modem script. This, I belive, is one of the defaults that is preinstalled on OSX.

Hope this helps, feel free to yell at me if it does not solve your problem!.

Mandus.

Recently I have "upgraded" to use the scripts for Nokia 3G phones from Ross Barkman's page at http://www.taniwha.org.uk/. The nice thing with these scripts is that you can set a custom APN as phonenumber in the userinterface. I now need this as our carrier have switched to a nonstandard APN.

I use the CID1 script with my E61i.
